Smell my finger

You can paint and create visual impressions, as well you can sing or model something and improve... But you can't produce desired smell with your body, and rarely it has production or existentinal value (we need taste to eat). Because of that you cannot create critic opinion on smell itself, it's completely intuitive and free from rational judgement. You can only create your opinion in some cases by comparing a relation between smell and object (vino for example). If the production utility value of smell equals to 0, the communication value is completely different. Therefore the sense of smell is most similar thing to art. Since it misses utility value, judgement is completely lead by personal point of view. Yet we can say "I felt that smell so I know now"... it is a valid cognitive experience.

Mona Lisa perspective twist

The team of scientist by the close analysis of Mona Lisa eyes has discovered two letters. "L" in the left, and "S" in the right eye.
They have also discovered number "72" in the background where the bridge used to be. They say it is the date 1472 that marks important moment in history when the bridge was destroyed by big flood.

I was always amazed by the amount of hype about Mona Lisa. Once I was in front of Luvre, but we did not have enough time to wait in the huge cue. I have never seen it for real.
So tonight I have opened the largest image I've found of the face close-up. (this is the image on the post... it is very small)
The mouth is super real... It looks like a photo from the beginning of 20th century.
Than I looked at the eyes. Of course it was impossible to see anything like letters on such a small image.
Than again I've looked at it, and I was wondering, why, why so many people are going crazy about this...

At the moment I saw 3 different perspectives on the face: eyes, nose and mouth.
If you look at the eyes and imagine it as one surface, the left eye (what we see as left eye) looks like it is more in the foreground comparing to the right eye. The effect is created by irregular shadow between the nose and left eye.
So if you look at this plane it looks like the left eye is popping out a bit, and right one is a bit more deep in perspective.

If you look at the nose, it is precisely directed in the exact position where the shape of the head is pointing at. It is perfectly matching the face and there's nothing strange with this middle plane.

Now take a look at the mouth. Mouth is completely different story. Mouth is opposite of the eyes, and the left side is going more deep than it should be. Right side of the mouth is popping out, close to us.
So now we have this 3 planes that are creating a small perspective twist.
Truly delightful stuff!

This micro change in perspective reminds me of temporal displacement experiments from Zbig Rybczynski:

Well I guess the painting is packed with experiments like this one and now I would love to see it for real.

Was it normal for women in that period to go around without eyebrows?

Crewest gallery and skulls

There are more skulls in Crewest gallery than in Alice Cooper dreams.
It won't be forever, so if you are in LA you must visit this amazing exhibition.
Around 100 artists are presenting their artworks on, around and about the skulls.
We entered the gallery and the crew was having a dinner in the corner of one room.
Meanwhile I was cruising around and making some shots of beautiful artworks. I cannot upload them all here, so here is the selection of the pieces I have found most interesting.

Here are some paintings made by my friend Aleksandar Buncic from Novi Sad.
Aca was a graffiti artist when I met him, but slowly he evolved to strong expressive painter. I like the empty post apocalyptic melancholic feel in his paintings. Still, it is loaded with positive criticism and observes everyday existential topics through his own macro lens.

wacom4 + win7 + 3dsmax error fix

Now this is one really annoying error!
I've spent all my afternoon searching the fix, and this is the only one that worked for me:

I have a fix for you…

3dsmax 2010 is triggering the launch of the Pen and Ink dll right after it loads all of its other plugins. The reason for this is unknown. It torches all of you Wacom settings though and the problem persists even if you remove/uninstall all components related to tablets. But…

The culprit is wisptis.exe. It can cause all kinds of problems with Max\Wacom\Zbrush etc. When it is triggered by an app it is still completely invisible, both in processes and in services. And if you remove it, it is automatically reinstalled by the OS. (Nice one MS) So here is how to get rid of it. (Warning this is unlikely to harm your system but hey things happen:)

1. Navigate to C:\windows\system32\wisptis.exe
2. Right click and go to Security..click Advanced
3. Go to the Owner tab
4. Click Edit
5. Add your login as a new user
6. Take ownership of the file.
7. Click “Change permissions”
8. Add your login account if you don’t see it.
9. Then edit the setting for the account and give your self full control.
10. Now you need to rename the wisptis.exe to something else and replace it with a empty text file of the same name.
11. Now when Windows call this file nothing happens and because the file is there it is not restored.

Audio sample American Beauty

The focus of the Past, Present & Future Craft practice commission was to examine the intangible characteristic of the spoken word and investigate the unseen affect of sound upon its inhabited environment.

The project centralizes around the context of a domestic argument. In this case the event samples an audio excerpt from the 1999 Sam Mendes Film ‘American Beauty’. The slow building dialogue between the three central characters family dinner climaxes with a sound clash of emotions. The cross-fire of the argument traverses the dinning table but where previously the inanimate everyday objects such as plates, cutlery, teapot etc were unable to express their character, the intensity of the conversation deforms their once static existence into objects of unseen familiarity.

The presented sound artifacts each encapsulate a momentary emotion of the argument.

Even if there's not enough space, there are different letraset typefaces, or there are some letters just missing.. nothing can stop average Italian to express their good taste and talent for visual arts. I saw this layout on entrance of some garage box near to my home in Milano, and it with all of it randomness and lack of order it still looks bloody good.

Well, it's too complex question, and I'm sceptic when it comes to talking lizards, But!
I know one thing for sure. Italian TV Mediaset is employing Ferengis for special propaganda tasks and I got one exclusive photo of make-up artist preparing Ferengi for a daily show.
This Ferengi is called Emilio Fede and is famous to be extremely capable in convincing Italian middle class that conservative alien sodomy is a best hobby in this part of the universe...

René Clair - Entr'acte (1924)

This cult surealist film is a statement how creativity is surpasing every possible limit of it's time. Rene Clair's masterpiece 1924 can proudly stand beside today's music video or advertisement.

For this production, the dadaists collaborating on the project had invented a new flavor of dada or surrealism: instantanéisme. The complete film takes about 20 minutes using such techniques as watching people run in slow motion, watching things happen in reverse, looking at a ballet dancer from underneath, watching an egg over a fountain of water get shot and instantly become a bird and watching people disappear. The cast included cameo appearances of Francis Picabia, Erik Satie, Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. The conductor of the orchestra at the premiere was Roger Désormière.

... Poster! Actually it's a typographic experiment.
It's called "Choosing My Own Way".

It's not a real experiment.
There is hardly anything for us humans that is not experimental.
We always try to prove something. Nature does not need to prove anything.
It's so hard for us to imagine anyone or anything doing something without trying to prove something. So we act like there is always someone or something trying to prove something. And it's not.
Throwing chubby colored typefaces in soft exploding cream is much more amusing than trying to prove anything. I dare to name it experiment, but it's not.
